“There are no foreign lands. It is only the traveler who is foreign.”
– Robert Louis Stevenson
The places we travel may be unfamiliar to us, but they’re familiar to everyone who lives there. This is something to keep in mind when vacation planning, because while traveling to different worlds may seem strange and unusual, self-imposed limits on where to travel can be reduced with just a little vacation preparation.
Reduce Travel Risk
Reducing travel risk doesn’t mean you can’t take a vacation! You just need to increase awareness of your surroundings and modify your behavior slightly. Most of the time, that’s all it takes for safe travel in another country. The entire country of Mexico is not fraught with danger. It’s a very large country where thousands of people live in resort towns like Cancun and Playa del Carmen every day, leading pleasant, productive, secure lives.
Prepare to Travel!
This is not to say there’s no crime in Mexico. Crime exits everywhere. The issue is how it’s publicized and who’s impacted by the crime. It’s more likely inattentive travelers will run into trouble, and that’s not because of the travel destination. If you anticipate the circumstances and observe the norms of other countries, you’ll be able to relax a little bit more and enjoy your vacation.

Here are some practical safety tips for your vacation in the Mexico Caribbean, the Riviera Maya, and the Yucatan Peninsula that can be applied to your travels anywhere.
Safe Travel Tips
- Scan your passport, travel itinerary, hotel reservation, plane ticket, and other travel documents before you leave on your vacation. Then email them to yourself so you can access them if they get lost.
- Before you travel, get your bank’s international phone number, fax number, and email address, so you can contact them if your credit or debit cards get lost. Consider bringing only cash or travelers checks and buying travel insurance.
- Try not to look like an obvious tourist but instead, blend with the locals and dress in a similar fashion. Don’t bring or wear expensive jewelry, or openly display cameras, travel guides, maps, or other tourist items.
- Before taking tours, anticipate how much cash you’ll need and bring only that amount. Remove cash from your wallet discreetly. Keep extra cash, travelers checks, credit or debit cards, passports, and plane tickets in the hotel safe.
- If it’s necessary to withdraw cash from an ATM, use machines that are inside banks, malls, or stores – not in isolated or secluded areas. Then promptly put your cash away.
- In crowded areas like markets, festivals, tours, buses, or airports, pay attention to the people around you to deter pickpockets, where one person may try to distract you while another tries to rob you. (Remember, this can happen in any country.)
- Travel in groups or pairs, and stay in designated tourist areas. Don’t wander off the beaten path. If you’re not certain about which areas to avoid, ask your hotel concierge.

So travel to your heart’s content, and enjoy the world! Just be conscientious, since you’re a visitor in a different country. On your next Mexico vacation, consider these Cancun and Playa del Carmen vacation packages.
