The tour consisted of a wild night where my friends and I were jumping from one bar to the other, with unlimited drinks. Especially compared with cities in other countries with the same number of people (even in Europe or the U.S.) where they have much higher numbers of murders and robberies, and those cities still get huge numbers of visitors every year

To answer the question that Mexican tourists always ask me regarding Cancun’s safety, the answer is simple, yes it is. At night I go out really late and by myself and I’ve never been afraid for my safety. One thing tourists usually ignore is that Cancun is basically divided in two areas, the hotel zone, which is an island, connected to the main land by a bridge where most hotels are located and the safest place ever, and the other area is Cancun downtown where actually most of the population lives. In the so called Downtown Cancun area is where most of the problems of the city are located, but tourists hardly ever walk beyond the first blocks, which are almost as safe as the hotel zone. Also, as I mentioned above, the important thing to keep in mind while visiting Cancun or any other city is to use our common sense and avoid areas that we simply would not visit in anywhere.

In recent times the reputation of Mexico, thanks to declarations made by the U.S. and Canadian governments, has been very damaged; now people think of this as a country governed by criminal organizations, which has also overshadowed the image of Cancun and other beach destinations in Mexico. In the minds of people there are no longer margaritas, or sombreros and girls in bikini. Now people think that if they come they can be executed, and that is not true. Mexico is aware that it is not a perfect country, but it is far from being a war zone, particularly in tourist areas. But it is everyone’s job to help change that, from what it was and what it is now, to an even safer and better place.

Why do I believe this? Simple, because while a pricey object usually only improves its outer shell and not its main function, there are certain objects and particularly certain services that really improve their quality depending on certain factors, such as the materials they contain; and for that reason they are not pricey but expensive. So the difference between something pricey and something expensive is that a pricey object is over valuated, where as something expensive justifies its price. Personally I believe that traveling falls into this latter category.

For example, when I think of how many times my sister has told me about her honeymoon trip on boat by the Rhine River, I believe that trip really paid off. Yes, probably it was very expensive, and it took her too many hours of work to pay for it, but it was worth every penny. She told me that the boat was beautiful in every sense, with details in every nook and an honestly enjoyable attention and kindness from the crew. She also told me about the wonderful wines, and the delicious food she and her husband tried in each city where they landed along the route. Today, it has been over ten years since their honeymoon, and she no longer cares about the costs involved in it, instead she thinks about how much that trip helped to strengthen her relationship with her new husband, and make her long awaited honeymoon as perfect as she now remembers.

I am sure that significant moments such as starting a family or celebrating the anniversary of it, are worth to do something extraordinary. This amazing place is famous for a series of archaeological and astronomical events that happen every time a season changes, and that give an air of mysticism. Because of its pyramidal shape, “El Castillo” is a true solar calendar. This Mayan temple is 91.86 feet high and has 91 steps in each of its four sides, which added to the platform on top of the pyramid represents a total of 365, in other words one step for each day of the year.

The most popular events occur during the equinoxes of spring and autumn, which take place in March and September respectively. During these days, the platforms on which the pyramid is built cast triangular shadows on the walls of the stairs. At its base are huge snake heads symbolizing the god Kukulkan, and the triangles of light and shadow caused by the illumination of the equatorial sun create  a magical illusion, in which it seems that a snake comes down to earth from the top of the pyramid to drink water.

During the summer solstice (on June 21 of each year) half of the pyramid of Kukulkan is covered with a shade and the other remains with the sun on a diagonal division. Opposite occurs in winter than in summer. While not an event as spectacular as the equinox it is a spectacular phenomenon that is worth witnessing at least once in a life time.

History of Cinco de Mayo

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May) is not Independence Day in Mexico. Mexico officially declared its independence from Spain on September 16, 1810, but the country was not finally free from Spanish rule until 1821 after a long and difficult fight – 11 years – to force the withdrawal of Spanish soldiers.

But there is a connection between these two holidays. Whereas Mexican Independence Day celebrates the country’s official separation from Spanish rule on September 16, Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s national unity as an autonomous country when it succeeded in preventing a subsequent invasion by France. Since this event occurred at Fuerte de Loreto in Puebla, Mexico, in 1862, it is known as The Battle of Puebla.

Cinco de Mayo is not traditionally celebrated throughout Mexico. It is considered a regional holiday in Puebla and in the northern Mexican and American border states where Mexicans celebrate with great enthusiasm. Ironically, this holiday is also celebrated more widely among Latin populations in the United States than in Mexico.

In these regions, the holiday is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage. Mexicans and Mexican-Americans – in addition to other Latin cultures in the U.S. – celebrate their cultural roots with traditional food and drinks, mariachi music and folkloric dancing, parades and fiestas.
