History of Cinco de Mayo
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May) is not Independence Day in Mexico. Mexico officially declared its independence from Spain on September 16, 1810, but the country was not finally free from Spanish rule until 1821 after a long and difficult fight – 11 years – to force the withdrawal of Spanish soldiers.
